Coping Skills

I thought it would be a nice thing to have a list of alternative coping skills.  Please feel free to comment and leave more suggestions for coping skills and emotions.

Please remember that these are things I have found helpful for me.  As each one of us is different, different things will help each of us.  No one coping skill is magic, and just because something works for you but doesn’t work for someone else, or vice versa, does not mean it’s an ineffective coping skill.


  • journal
  • draw, paint, color
  • collage
  • play/listen to music
  • take a nap
  • talk to a friend
  • paint your nails
  • cry
  • take a bath
  • play with/cuddle with a pet
  • take a walk
  • read
  • watch a funny movie
  • pray
  • meditate


  • throw eggs in the bathtub
  • throw ice against the shower wall
  • punch a pillow
  • scream into a pillow
  • tear up paper
  • rip up cardboard
  • cut things apart
  • throw something soft against the wall
  • IF you are cleared to do so, exercise
  • pray
  • meditate
  • practice mindfulness


  • write a letter
  • play online
  • call someone
  • journal
  • play with pets
  • go to a bookstore
  • go to a cafe or coffee shop
  • pray
  • meditate


  1. Sorry to jump in with a negative but I find from personal experience online gaming can make me lonelier!

    If you are playing a multi-player game with people you know, I’d say it’s good. But if you are playing some random game by yourself, I’d say it’s not so useful.

    Writing a letter, however, is top notch advice :-p

    • It’s good for you to know that playing online can make you lonelier. Each person has a different set of coping skills that work for them. It doesn’t make any one coping skill “wrong” or “negative” (unless it is harmful); it just means it’s not right for you.
